Tools for Tomorrow’s Agriculture

Path 34

What if chip technology could help solve one of the biggest agricultural challenges? This technology is precisely what OnePlanet Research Center is working on. Based in Gelderland, the region where 42% of Dutch nitrogen-sensitive nature is located, this innovation hub is pioneering affordable sensor systems to help farmers accurately measure emissions like nitrogen and methane.

Founded in 2019, OnePlanet is a multidisciplinary partnership between Wageningen University & Research, Radboud University, Radboudumc, and imec, a world-leading research hub for nano- and digital technology. Together, they're developing high-tech tools for a healthier, more sustainable world.

From chip to change
OnePlanet's latest breakthrough? Photonic chips for use in open dairy stables. Tiny light-based sensors that can measure ultra-low gas concentrations. Until now, reliable nitrogen measurements has often ben too expensive or unavailable for many farmers. Miniaturised photonic technology changes this.

By making compact and affordable sensors, OnePlanet gives farmers real-time insight into their emissions, allowing them to take action based on data; adjust processes, test interventions, and monitor results. This photonic sensor could in the future measure more than just nitrogen, including...

✔️ Nitrous oxide
✔️ Odour emissions
✔️ Nitrate in water

This opens the door to more brilliant, data-driven farming that helps meet environmental and regulatory goals.

Big ambitions, real progress
Prototypes of the first version are already being tested at WUR’s research farm De Marke, with promising results. The technology could be deployed in most farm systems within two years if development and validation continues.

With strong support from the Province of Gelderland and national programs like PhotonDelta, OnePlanet builds the foundations for data-driven agriculture, where emissions are visible, actionable and verifiable.

Let’s scale up, together
OnePlanet believes that chip sensor technology can drive sustainable change, locally and globally. But they can't do it alone. Accelerating this innovation requires international partnerships with governments, agri-tech startups, researchers and industry.

Does your work involve agricultural emissions, environmental sensing or future farming? Let’s explore the possibilities, together.
