How One Coalition is Turning Food Waste into Opportunity

Path 34

The Netherlands is serious about reducing food waste. One of the key drivers? Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Food Waste Free United): a fast-growing publicprivate coalition launched in 2018, now counting over 100 partners. This group is working to cut national food waste by half by 2030 (SDG 12.3), from producer to consumer, together with over 110 stakeholders, mostly businesses.

They show that reducing food waste isn’t just a moral or environmental issue. It’s a strategic business opportunity.

From challenge to movement
Since launching in 2018, Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling has turned a challenge
into a collective mission. Its approach? Bring everyone in the food chain to the table: farmers,
food brands, retailers, but also consumers, government and science. Instead of scattered efforts, it’s all about working smarter together:
✔️ Supermarkets share real-time data,
✔️ Innovators develop cutting-edge tech,
✔️ Policymakers clear the path,
✔️ Citizens join in through national campaigns.
The result? A bold, nationwide effort that makes reducing food waste doable and even
exciting.

Real impact, real innovation

Progress is already visible. The Netherlands has reduced food waste by nearly 20% since the
foundation began. Concrete wins include:
👉 Retail impact: Only 0.89% of food in supermarkets goes to waste—a 35% drop
👉 Industry solutions: 96% of processed potatoes are reused as food or feed
👉 Public engagement: #Verspillingsvrij (‘Waste-Free Week’) activates millions annually

Ready to scale
Food waste is a global issue that impacts climate, hunger, and supply chains. This Dutch coalition believes in sharing what works and learning from others. That’s why they’re actively seeking international collaboration.
