How One Coalition is Turning Food Waste into Opportunity

How the Netherlands Is Tackling Food Waste
The Netherlands is taking a coordinated approach to food waste reduction. Across the food value chain, businesses, researchers, government and consumers are working together to prevent food waste, make better use of surplus and turn unavoidable food streams into new opportunities.

A key driver of this movement is Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling (Food Waste Free United), a Dutch public-private coalition that brings more than 100 partners together to help halve food waste by 2030. Its approach shows how collaboration and innovation can turn food waste reduction from a sustainability challenge into a practical business opportunity.

Food Waste Reduction Through Collaboration

Since launching in 2018, Stichting Samen Tegen Voedselverspilling has turned a challenge
into a collective mission. Its approach? Bring everyone in the food chain to the table: farmers,
food brands, retailers, but also consumers, government and science. Instead of scattered efforts, it’s all about working smarter together:

✔️ Supermarkets share real-time data,
✔️ Innovators develop cutting-edge tech,
✔️ Policymakers clear the path,
✔️ Citizens join in through national campaigns.
The result? A bold, nationwide effort that makes reducing food waste doable and even
exciting.

Measuring the Impact of Food Waste Reduction

Progress is already visible. The Netherlands has reduced food waste by nearly 20% since the
foundation began. Concrete wins include:

👉 Retail impact: Only 0.89% of food in supermarkets goes to waste—a 35% drop
👉 Industry solutions: 96% of processed potatoes are reused as food or feed
👉 Public engagement: #Verspillingsvrij (‘Waste-Free Week’) activates millions annually

Scaling Dutch Food Waste Solutions Internationally

Food waste is a global issue that impacts climate, hunger, and supply chains. This Dutch coalition believes in sharing what works and learning from others. That’s why they’re actively seeking international collaboration.
